The Vulcan Seals Type 1689 IMO® can suit I.M.O.® ACE Series positive displacement pumps of generation 3 or above, fitted with “T” or “Q” code shaft seals.
The Vulcan Seals Type 1689 IMO® offers both performance and handling benefits over the OEM design, owing to the standard rotary plus stationary design instead of the original multi-component design that requires assembly on the shaft during installation.
The rotary part employs set screws to drive from the shaft the same as the original design, but the set screws can be readily accessed unlike the original.
The single-part stationary is also much easier to handle and install compared to the original. For ACE pumps with “U” or “V” code seals fitted, please use the Vulcan Seals Type 1690, and contact us for details on our alternative seals for ACE generation 1 or 2 pump models.

The Vulcan Seals Type 1689 IMO® can replace the five-part OEM seal supplied for ACE series pumps, generations 3 and above, we produce the following standard configuration seals with a rotary and a stationary, which are far easier to install than the original OEM seal:
304 Stainless Steel | VCP1 Carbon | P |
Nitrile | -30°C | +120°C |
The PV chart shows the maximum operating pressuresof this Vulcan seal type based on the seal face materialsused. Different lines on the chart indicate different materialcombinations, as shown underneath.
It also assumes stable operation in a clean, cool, lubricatingand non-volatile fluid with an adequate flush rate.
For more in-depth pressure rating calculations based onspecific material combinations and application conditions, please consult us.
Stainless Steel vs Carbon | x 0.30 |
A. Shaft size: 1” therefore pressure is 12 bar (from PV chart)
B. Media: Water (multiplier = 0.85)
C. Temperature: 50°C (multiplier = 1.00)
D. Speed: 1450 rpm (multiplier = 1.00)E. Face combination: Stainless Steel vs Carbon (multiplier = 0.30)
For this particular Type 12 seal size, the calculation for the approximate guidance maximum operating pressure would be:
A x B x C x D x E12 bar x 0.85 x 1.00 x 1.00 x 0.30 = 3.06 bar
Please note that due to the many operational andapplication variables that affect seal performance, theinformation given on this page is for guidance only.
We therefore strongly recommend careful individualtesting and monitoring of all seals and related equipmentfor any proposed application. Our policy is one of continuous technical and efficiencyimprovement.
